Chapter History
The Montgomery Alumni Chapter was chartered on April 9, 1949 by Lloyd Bouie, Caesar Culver, Samuel Gantt, Edgar A. Montgomery, B. J. Noland, Edward K. Weaver, and Alexander W. West, Jr.
The first chapter Polemarch was Caesar Culver and Edgar Montgomery the Keeper of Records and Exchequer. Meetings were held in the homes of brothers, who were responsible for providing food and refreshments at the conclusion of business.
In September 1953, Ralph D. Abernathy was elected Polemarch; Ralph J. Bryson, a newcomer to Montgomery, Keeper of Records, and Montgomery continued as Keeper of Exchequer. Among the members were Robert Austin, Albert W. Mitchell, Coach A. E. Simmons, and Charles W. Thomas. The Alumni Chapter and Beta Zeta hosted their first Southern Province meeting in April 1954 with the assistance of Phi Delta Kappa Sorority. Activities were held on the campus of Alabama State University, at the Community House on Union Street and the Club 400. Preparations were made for 50 brothers.
In 1961, Montgomery hosted the 11th annual meeting of the Southern Province, four months prior to the Golden Anniversary Conclave in Bloomington, IN. The Alumni Chapter was under the leadership of Jackson Bruce and had a membership of thirty brothers. Grand Polemarch C. Rodger Wilson was the representative from Grand Chapter, and the Province passed a resolution to honor him with the Laurel Wreath, which Brother Wilson received several years later.
The middle and late '60s saw the Alumni Chapter continue to grow under the administrations of Willie J. Glaze, George S. Alexander, William B. Gary, Moses Clark, and Clifford C. Baker. Ralph J. Bryson and Edgar Montgomery remained fixed in their previous offices. Individual contributions became quite prominent in such brothers as Albert Mitchell, John J. Ivery, Edward L. Wood, Alfred Nixon, Robert Williams, Robert Oliver, Charlie Stallworth, Leonard L. Burke, and C. L. Loman.
With each succeeding administration, the Alumni Chapter continues to make progress, serving the youth and citizens of Montgomery. Under the leadership of W. Troy Massey, the chapter purchased its first house in 1986 with the assistantship of William D. Lawson. The chapter's leadership role among social and service organizations appears to be quite secure for many years to come.
